    Treatment with creosote

Creosote impregnation is a technology that was developed in the early 20th century according to the Rupping process and it to this day remains the process guaranteeing the best longevity for outdoor timbers and wood in contact with the soil, and especially so for railway sleepers. Both the product and the technique used have been regularly modernised:

The autoclave impregnation technique today ensures an ideal distribution of the product throughout the wood. The high-temperature application in a closed system guarantees the best possible protection of our environment.

Creosote is an organic product derived from coal that has been progressively purified of the heavy polycyclic elements, dangerous to health, as well as of the light components difficult to fix in wood, which are volatile and therefore the most odorous. Nowadays, our Company uses only WEI-Type C creosote, the best quality available on the market.

By opting for this WEI-Type C creosote and the best application techniques, our Company offers its railway customers a triple advantage over traditional impregnation:

    1. As we know that these solvents (light fractions) evaporate anyway, it has been possible to reduce the quantity injected into every sleeper by about 20%. The environmental risk is thus already lessened.

    2. This reduction is more than proportionally important because the last litres injected were certainly those least well fixed in the wood.

    3. As the news creosote no longer contains volatile compounds, the risk of loss and pollution of the ballast during the period of utilisation of the sleeper is reduced virtually to zero.
